Unveiling the Orphan Crisis in Liberia: A Glimpse into the Lives of 184,000 Vulnerable Children

According to a survey, it is estimated that Liberia is home to approximately 184,000 orphans, highlighting the challenging circumstances faced by these children. Among them, the majority have lost their fathers (114,632), while 46,920 have lost their mothers, and 22,448 have tragically lost both parents. The plight of orphaned children in Liberia is truly heart-wrenching. As a country in Sub-Saharan Africa, Liberia shares common challenges with other nations in the region, including widespread poverty, high rates of malaria and AIDS, and a history of conflict.

Liberia has endured two violent civil wars since 1989, resulting in the displacement of up to one million people who sought refuge in camps. During the first civil war (1989-1996), it is estimated that as many as 20 percent of the combatants were children under the age of 18. These innocent children have witnessed unimaginable atrocities and have been left orphaned as a result. Tragically, some were even coerced into participating in violent acts and forced to fight alongside soldiers.

Since the end of the war a decade ago, Liberia has faced significant challenges in rebuilding the nation. The country has also been heavily impacted by the spread of HIV/AIDS and the Ebola virus. The Ebola and Covid-19 outbreaks alone claimed the lives of over 4,800 people in Liberia, leaving behind numerous orphaned children. These children, who bear no responsibility for their circumstances, often face discrimination and marginalization due to cultural stigmas falsely associating witchcraft or sorcery with AIDS and Ebola orphans.

Living in dire poverty, many of these children are abandoned or forced into labor. Orphaned and abandoned children are highly vulnerable to dangers such as human trafficking, child labor, and abuse.

On Friday, June 23, 2023, Passionate Hands Give Back Inc. organized a community outreach feeding program at the Comfort K. Toe Orphanage home in the Christopolis Community, Brewerville City, Montserrado County. The orphanage is a home to over 150 orphans, who were provided with meals during the event. Additionally, the organization distributed footwear (slippers) to protect the children’s feet during the rainy season. The staff members of Passionate Hands Give Back Inc. dedicated the entire day to engaging with the children, offering activities such as hairstyling, games, storytelling, and more.

Passionate Hands Give Back Inc. is actively seeking individuals like you to join their mission and help bring hope to vulnerable children, many of whom are living in extreme poverty and facing numerous challenges. They firmly believe that every individual deserves access to basic necessities such as clothing, shoes, and food. The organization is committed to making a positive difference in the lives of children in Liberia and expresses deep gratitude for the continuous support and generosity they receive.

Passionate Hands Give Back Inc. emphasizes the importance of collective action in creating a meaningful and positive impact within the community. They extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who has joined them on this crucial journey.
